PS5: Sony does not make any losses with the consoles - but only with a model

With game consoles, manufacturers usually do not earn money - at least until some time after the launch. Nintendo is the great exception, which according to analysts with the switch from the first day to make profits. By contrast, Microsoft has allegedly never earned only one cent with an Xbox. The hardware losses are re-recorded by software sales and services of services (e.g., Xbox Game Pass). Sony, however, now announces that the PS5 finally gets gains.

PS5 now brings profits

Sony's Financial Chef Hiroki Totoki announced the merry customer in the current financial report (via Bloomberg): With the PlayStation 5 Sony moves from now on each sold console profits. This only applies to the model with drive.

The message is quite surprising, considering that the PS5 came first in November 2020 and relatively new and powerful components are installed in the new console generation of Sony and Microsoft.

PS5 DE is subsidized: With the Digital Edition Sony still records losses, but these are collected by other hardware sales, such as those of the PS4 and hardware accessories. Not to forget that owners can buy the PS5 DE only digital games where some costs are eliminated (retail, manufacture) and which can not be sold used.

Drive costs no 100 euros: The message also confirms that the PS5 drive does not justify the price difference between the two models (399 euros against 499 euros). According to experts estimates, the drive of the PS5 is likely to cost about 50 euros. However, due to the above aspects, Sony is ready to subsidize the Digital Edition.

Finally, get more consoles?

Sony's big challenge in the coming months is not to increase demand, as Totoki says, because every PS5 on the market is bought within seconds. Instead, it is about driving up production. And there are good news, too.

Sony was able to secure enough semiconductor chips according to its own statement to deliver almost 15 million ps5 consoles to March 2022. This should finally be satisfied with a large part of the demand. Whether the offer is enough to completely relax the situation, remains to be seen. Obviously, the demand for video game hardware is currently as big as maybe never before.
